The inner meaning of marriage
Marriage is like an imaginary building of great beauty and grandeur. Those who have never experienced it are very eager to enter. On the contrary, those who are in it, seek to get out if there is disharmony. In the Tamil language, marriage is called Thirumana, which means the union of the minds of the couple getting married. In Kannada, it is called Maangalya Dhaara, which means - with a good and broad mind, let there be a union of the married couple. The English word for marriage stands for:
M - Merger of male and female energies
A - Arrangement of two lives to become one
R - Research into individual interests and respect for them
R - Result that will be of benefit to the world which is raising good children
I - Interest in one another’s activities and offering mutual support
A - Agreement not to argue, fight or create situations leading to separation
G - Guidance to one another, as both parties to a marriage are equal
E - Enjoyment of life
Many people marry just for enjoyment. Marriage is something deeper. Before the enjoyment, there needs to be a very strong foundation. Both parties to a marriage, male and female are equal. They are like the two eyelids. We cannot say the upper eyelid is more important than the lower one. When both come together at the same time, the eyes are protected. Similarly, when both husband and wife come together in their mind and thought, the children are protected. Children are as delicate as our eyes.
In a marriage, two minds and two hearts come together to become one unified mind and heart. Only then can it be called a true marriage. The two minds and two hearts are like train tracks coming from different directions and merging in one place. When there is only one set of tracks, there is room only for one train to move at a time. Similarly, the husband and wife should always move together towards a common goal. The foundations of marriage should be protected just as tracks are kept safe for a train to travel.
In a moving train full of passengers, some sleep, others may be reading a paper or watching the passing scenery. Everyone is doing different things. Similarly, every married couple approaches life differently. Depending on their outlook on life, so are the children born to them. If their outlook is broad and positive, so will be the children.
We should never compare our marriage with that of others. All trains have to travel on the same type of tracks, whether a goods train, a commuter/passenger train or an express train. Regardless of the type of train, the safety of the train and its goods and passengers is paramount. Similarly, one we enter the sacred space of marriage, we should safeguard peace and harmony which will allow us to experience great joy for the rest of our lives.
