Revitalizing India
India is blessed with some of the greatest rivers in the world. There are nine major river systems that span the country. One common factor amongst all rivers, where ever they may in the world is that they all disappear into the ocean. Along the way, rivers give us so many opportunities to use its waters for a good purpose. Instead, we pollute our rivers as we have done with Mother Ganga and other rivers. Yet, rivers continue to give water. Along with rivers, there are thousands of lakes, big and small in the vicinity of these rivers. These lakes serve important purposes. They keep the surrounding air cool and moist, support local ecosystems and are important water sources for plants, animals and humans. We can connect rivers to these lakes via canals and thereby maximize utilization of water in an easy and eco-friendly method.
When lakes are revitalized, agriculture benefits. India has a rich history of village life. These days city dwellers are realizing the rejuvenating environment of the countryside and often go to such places on weekends and holidays. If the road infrastructure is improved and all villages are connected with high-speed highways to cities and major centers, it will make it easier for the population to spread out and the imbalance we see in population distribution will be lessened. The impact on the land and resources will also be relieved. Along with roads, we should develop solar and wind energy which will help provide 24-hour electricity to our villages. If we enjoy roads, electricity, and water in the cities on a 24-hour basis, why shouldn’t our brothers and sisters, living in villages and working the land growing food for us, not enjoy those benefits?
Blessings to all
