Advertising insecurity
Every politician’s weakness is the fear of losing power. This fear morphs into greed and insecurity. This insecurity is manifested by giant posters and banners that line the roads overshadowing beautiful trees that have stood majestically for decades. There are innumerable promises made “in writing” on such posters. All one needs for proof of “in writing” is to look at the posters politicians put up. But once election day passes, these are forgotten the moment the posters and banners come down.
After the posters come imposing vehicular convoys that transport ministers from their homes to the office. Sometimes, traffic is made to come to a standstill while the high and mighty in the Government pass. We are made to watch this parade everyday. Instead, they should create the spirit of change by either walking, carpooling or even taking a bus to work. There is no better way to be close to the people than to travel like ordinary people. If there were no giant posters of politicians faces all over the city, it is likely that few would recognize them in public. The insecurity of keeping their seats in power will be replaced by the security of people’s love and adoration if they start to create real change in the lives of ordinary people. Such leaders will never be forgotten. Rules may start at the top and trickle down to the bottom. But work must start at the bottom and travel up to the top. Politicians should make the rules at the “top” and work “at the bottom” with the masses. Only then can the nation prosper.
With happiness and prosperity, insecurity vanishes. But when prosperity is restricted to an individual or limited to money, insecurity becomes a constant companion. True power come when wealth is shared. Just as nature shares air equally between a rich and a poor man’s lungs, we should share our ideas and contributions equally regardless of caste, gender, nationality and religion. A scientist’s contributions are enjoyed by all nations and by all the people of the world. They don’t put up giant billboards advertising their contributions. They are fully secure in their knowledge of what they can give to the world. They are a good role model for any politician.
