Filing for change
Swamiji says…
We owe the health and well being of our physical bodies to the farmers of the world. It is a modern day miracle that we don’t have to go in search of every meal. A variety of foods from different parts of the country and the world can share space on the same plate. For each item of food, although seeds are the source, it is the hand of the farmer who handles the seeds and nurtures the crops that is very important. By producing high quality and healthy food grains they are in a way, “preventive doctors” of the country.
The overall happiness of the population, which is a reflection of mental wellbeing, is in the hands of politicians and government servants. The seeds that they handle are the millions of files containing everything that the government does or is supposed to do. A government file, whether big or small, important or insignificant is a vital component of society. The contents of some of these files pertain to the health of the vital organs of the country such as infrastructure, roads, ports, airports, electrical grid and so on.
A portion of our hard earned money is returned to the government in the form of tax and some of this money is used to pay the salaries of government servants. There is nothing humble about them these days except for their generic title “servants”. Anytime there is exchange of money, there is an exchange of mental energy. In this manner, a portion of our karma is attached to the taxes we pay. This is then transferred to a common pool and then distributed to government servants. This exchange of karmic energy is unavoidable. But there are ways to mitigate the influence of that energy.
By working hard and sincerely, trying to give back more than what we receive and offering timely help to the people will nullify the potential effects of karma that we receive from others when we accept their energy in the form of money. If farmers mishandled seeds and do not plant seeds in a timely manner according to the season, the quality of food on our plate will also be affected. When government servants mishandle files and treat them carelessly, the quality of life for the average citizen will be degraded. While this may not directly affect government officials, it will indirectly do so through karmic exchange. This is especially significant if they accept additional money as bribes for work which they are already being paid a regular salary.
